What to Expect from this IPVanish Review?

When it comes to browsing the web nowadays, protecting sensitive information is becoming more of a priority. It’s for this reason why if I’m traveling, using public Wi-Fi, or simply hopping online to access personal information, I choose to use the best Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN connects users to the private server and further encrypts their data to easily access the web without worrying about their information being logged or tracked.

Today, there are many VPN services out there, but they are different when it comes to protection, performance, and overall features. Some VPN might meet your needs, while others might not… So, we’re here to help determine which VPN service is an excellent fit for you. In this review, specifically, we are going to take a closer look at IPVanish VPN and compare it with some of the best services. Let’s see whether IPVanish is really the Best VPN service across the globe as they claim to be.

IPVanish Pros and Cons

Before we dive deep into IPVanish VPN features, here are the pros and cons of this service.

What We Like

Top download speed
Allows torrenting
Unlimited simultaneous connections
Strong encryption
Allows split tunneling
Superb customer support
What We Dislike

Controversial no data logging policy
Under-five eyes surveillance
Only few servers work with Netflix

So, that’s our general impression, wondering about all the details that lead us to that conclusion, well, keep reading. The first thing we’ll discuss is IPVanish history. Excellent performing service or not so good; this is where we started to question if the company was a great fit for us.

About IPVanish

IPVanish VPN was established back in 2012. Based in Orlando, Florida, IPVanish is owned and managed by Mudhook Media Inc. It claims to be the fastest VPN with highly secure connections and some of the most affordable rates available. But we can’t just take their word for it, and we’ll get into pricing later in this article.

IPVanish has 1,600+ servers and over 40,000 IP addresses around the world. This is incredible because the closer you are to a particular server, the faster your Internet speed. Considering that IPVanish has a global reach, they have a better chance of providing better services to you.

IPVanish owns and manages about 90% of its data center, also known as points of presence (POPs), except in the areas such as Albania, where they must lease hardware. The company claims to have servers in 75 countries, but after counting the servers we could access, we only found 60. When we asked the customer support representative, he said it was because some servers were still under maintenance.

Considering that IPVanish is headquartered in the US, the company is subject to five eyes jurisdiction. The five eyes intelligence alliance member countries include the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia. These countries will investigate, trace and share user data whenever they deem necessary. For you, this may be a profound breach of your privacy and security, so it’s always important to know this before choosing IPVanish.

OpenVPN

A highly popular open-source protocol, OpenVPN is one of the most reliable protocols out there. OpenVPN is not only secure but also incredibly fast. It’s highly configurable and can easily bypass firewalls. OpenVPN works perfectly with routers, iOS, Android, Linux, macOS, Windows, and other devices. The only issue about OpenVPN is that you might have to download another software for it to work, making it a pretty tricky installation. However, according to IPVanish, they have an in-house program that will have the protocol up and running effortlessly and efficiently. Also, you can pair OpenVPN with UDP (User Datagram Protocol) and TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) for more benefits.

IPVanish Features

  • Zero log policy
  • Torrenting
  • Kill switch
  • Split tunneling
  • Anonymous and dynamic IP addresses

Will IPVanish Log My Data?

According to their official website, IPVanish doesn’t log personal data. This means IPVanish won’t collect or monitor your web activities or sell your personal information to third parties. All that is required to register with IPVanish is your payment method and email address. The only information they claim to track is non-personal data that comes to their website. This non-personal data includes:

  • Average time spent online
  • Bounce rate
  • Operating system
  • Browser type
  • Page requests

This data is collected using pixels, cookies, or other technologies like Google analytics. Essentially, depending on the web browser that you use, you can customize your cookie settings or altogether avoid using cookies.

Although IPVanish zero data logging policy sounds genuine, the United States District Court Investigation had hundreds of users questioning whether the company was true to its word. When the criminals had to be stopped, it’s clear that IPVanish provided user information to some government agencies, particularly the Department of Homeland Security. This is against their “zero data logging policy.” However, IPVanish isn’t the only VPN service suspected of breaking their no-data logging policy. But the good news is we haven’t found any data leakage complaints since 2016.

Does IPVanish Have A Kill Switch?

Yes, of course! A kill switch plays a significant role in protecting your IP address from leakage. If the VPN you use doesn’t have a kill switch, your IP address will be momentarily exposed if your connection to their network is lost. So, a kill switch automatically shuts down your web browsers and locks you from the Internet up to when the connection is reestablished. This might be painful if you are downloading large files and don’t want to be interrupted. Fortunately, you can turn off the network lock feature anytime you want.

What type of tunneling does IPVanish VPN offer?

IPVanish offers split tunneling. Split tunneling is amazing since it lets you connect to other networks while still using a VPN. All VPN reduce Internet speed and slightly compromises your bandwidth. However, split tunneling helps deal with this problem, apparently improving user experience.

IPVanish Encryption

Now let’s talk about IPVanish encryption. Encryption is a code that protects user data when browsing the Internet. Anyone with a computer can easily read Non-encrypted data. However, encrypted data is pretty hard to access without authorization. That said, IPVanish employs AES-256 encryption, the best quality encryption standard available today.

Can I Use IPVanish For Streaming?

IPVanish is an excellent VPN for accessing various streaming services. However, the bad news is you can’t access Netflix from some of their servers. You can only unblock Netflix from their New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, and Ashburn servers. You can access other streaming services, including CBS All Access, CBS Sports, WWE Network, Sling TV, NBC Sports, MLB TV, HBO, ESPN+, and Crunchyroll.

Can I Use IPVanish For Torrenting?

Although the company doesn’t openly advertise that their VPN supports torrenting, it’s one of the best VPN if you are looking to torrent files securely. With IPVanish support for bitcoin, a no-logs policy, and a kill switch, it has everything you need to safeguard your privacy when torrenting.

IPVanish Protocols

Internet Protocols usually determine how data is sent across a network. Think of protocols as different routes that can be taken to reach the same destination. Some roads will be safer while others will be faster, so IPVanish uses a combination of protocols to achieve both security and speed. Let’s check out the available options.

IPSec
IPSec or Internet Protocol Security encrypts IP data packets for transmission and tunneling. IPSec is available for most mobile devices and computers, which is perfect. But keep in mind that IPSec doesn’t define a specific authentication function or encryption algorithm independently. This means it isn’t the most secure connection if it’s not combined with other Internet protocols.
IKEv2
IKEv2 or the Internet Key Exchange Protocol Version 2 is the protocol that’s created via IPSec. It configures a particular approach with regard to how the IP packets are encoded. The best thing about this protocol is that if you ever lose your Internet connection, IKEv2 re-establishes your connection automatically. This is great for mobile device users who might find themselves switching between cellular networks and Wi-Fi.
With IPSec and IKEv2 working together, you can rest assured that your IP is well protected.
L2TP
L2TP or Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol never encrypts. It only builds a tunnel for user data to travel through. When it comes to encryption, L2TP pairs with IPSec, which deals with data integrity checks, channel security, and encryption. L2TP/IPSec connections are secure and work perfectly with almost all mobile devices.
TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)
TCP and OpenVPN together make a highly popular and reliable VPN connection. Its error correction helps prevent data packets from getting lost when traveling from one place to another. Technically, with TCP’s error correction, users can regularly experience failed websites and incomplete downloads because some data went missing or is off.
SSTP
SSTP or Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol presents all amazing benefits of OpenVPN considering that it’s secure, fast, and can bypass firewalls. What makes SSTP popular is that it’s designed by Microsoft and is completely integrated with all Microsoft operating systems.

How Fast Is IPVanish?

In all our tests, although IPVanish continuously provided incredible speeds in the US, connections were less consistent in other locations. This was true, especially for long-distance connections. For example, when we connected to the Australian servers from the United Kingdom, our download speeds dropped to only 2Mbps, far slower than NordVPN 50Mbps. On the other hand, US download speeds hovered around 200Mbps, which is more than enough for many users. However, download speeds from European servers ranged between 40 Mbps and 100 Mbps.

IPVanish Subscriptions

IPVanish is one of the most affordable VPNs we’ve tried so far. Although we’ve seen some VPNs that are available for as low as $2.75 per month, IPVanish cheapest subscription plan is $3.75 per month. IPVanish prices for their VPN service begin with monthly plans billed at $4.99 in the first month, which increases to $9.99 per month after that. The yearly plan billed at $3.75 per month for the first year is the best value; it’s billed at $44.99 now and $89.99 after that.

Also, IPVanish provides a VPN+ Cloud Storage package utilizing 500GB from SugarSync. Incase you regularly use SugarSync, this is an excellent deal. Purchase SugarSync from their official SugarSync website, and you’ll only pay $18,95 per month for the 500GB, so choosing the IPVanish plan saves you lots of money and helps you get the VPN for free.

IPVanish offers two subscription deals: their one-month plan and the yearly plan. The former is the most expensive, at $5.49 per month. Keep in mind that IPVanish doesn’t offer a free trial, although you get a 30-day moneyback guarantee to try out their service.

IPVanish Customer Support

As great as technology is, sometimes it fails, and when it does, it’s essential to know who you can talk to. Even when there isn’t anything wrong, understanding a VPN can be a little confusing. So, you need help. In such cases, it’s crucial to ensure that the VPN service you have chosen has outstanding customer service. How exactly does IPVanish VPN support its clients? Let’s find out!

Customer Support Features

IPVanish is one of the few VPNs that we’ve tried and found to have outstanding customer support service. They have different contact methods that you can use to get in touch with the support team. They’ve got a 24/7 live chat facility, email support, telephone, and a comprehensive FAQ section. There are different ways for you to find answers to the problems you are experiencing.

The customer support agents are professional and friendly. If you don’t get answers right away, the representatives will politely ask you to wait in the queue as an agent deals with other customers. I’ve never had to wait for more than five minutes to get connected to a support representative. With email support, you may have to wait for 24 hours to get a reply.

Customer Support Rating

So, although I thought IPVanish’s customer service was excellent, here is what other customers think about their service. When I checked Amazon reviews, I found that back in 2017, customers were not happy because IPVanish didn’t have any customer service.

At some point, they only had email support and took over 48 hours to respond. A year after, in 2018, IPVanish got their first positive user review for their customer support. Over the years, IPVanish has done a lot to improve its support service, and it seems to be paying off.

On Trustpilot, IPVanish got a five-star rating from more than 2,000 reviews, which is terrific. While I wasn’t able to specifically search for customer support, I found that many people were pleased with it in most of the recent user reviews, with about 84% of the user reviews at five stars.

Payment Options

Are you looking to sign up with IPVanish? When it comes to payment options, IPVanish accepts PayPal and credit cards. IPVanish accepts payment via bitcoin, which is a great plus if you are concerned about your privacy and don’t want to share your banking details with the company.

How To Cancel IPVanish?

If you want to cancel, you can easily do so through the IPVanish user control. All you have to do is log in to your account. Once in your account, head straight to the subscription page and click on “I wish to cancel my subscription.”

IPVanish App

You can use the IPVanish App on multiple devices: Kodi, Chrome OS, Android TV, Amazon Fire Stick, iOS, Android, Linux, macOS, And Windows. Just took a look at user reviews from Google play and apple stores. Apparently, iOS users are more pleased with the IPVanish App than their Android counterparts. The app got a 4.5 rating in the apple store; I would give it the same rating.

When I opened the app on my iPhone 12, I found it was straightforward to use. I never had any issues. On the other hand, in the Google store, IPVanish App got a 3.5 rating. Many Android users complained about encountering a few connection issues.

IPVanish vs. Encrypt.me

Before we finish, let’s compare IPVanish with one of its fierce competitors: Encrypt.me. Taking a closer look at some of the key features, IPVanish and Encrypt.me are pretty comparable. One thing I don’t like about Encrypt.me is that they only have a few servers. Today, they have more than 100 servers in 60+ countries; IPVanish has whopping 1,600 servers in 75 countries. With 16 times more servers, IPVanish has better chances of connecting you to a server from your location.

IPVanish vs. Encrypt.me Features

FeatureIPVanishEncrypt.me

→ See IPVanish Plans & Subscriptions

Encrypt.me is expensive. Their cheapest subscription plan (which is their unlimited plan) is $9.99 per month. Both VPNs are part of the international surveillance alliance as they are headquartered in the United States, which is part of the 5 Eyes. This means both VPNs are highly likely to share your data with the government.

When it comes to data logging, Encrypt.me has admitted to logging user-session information and deleting it after 16 days, while IPVanish doesn’t log session data. Both offer split tunneling for Android devices only. Only IPVanish allows you to torrent files or stream on Netflix.

While both VPNs offer dynamic IP addresses, IPVanish also offers anonymous IP addresses. The good news is that both VPNs frequently rotate their IP address, making it harder for hackers to track you. Another important feature that both VPN have in common is that they support unlimited simultaneous connections. However, IPVanish does have some great features that Encrypt.me lacks:

  • Netflix streaming: This allows you to access multiple streaming services, including Netflix, Amazon Prime.
  • Torrenting: IPVanish will allow users to torrent files.

Overall, IPVanish seems like the best option for me.

IPVanish Final Verdict

So, to wrap up, IPVanish will be an excellent choice for you if you prefer:

  • Superb customer service
  • Ability to turn ON/OFF the kill switch
  • Ability to torrent
  • Split tunneling
  • Decent internet speed
  • High-quality encryption

Look elsewhere if:

  • Want unlimited access to Netflix
  • Prefer a cheap service
  • You’re not comfortable with the five eyes alliance jurisdiction

After checking through this review, you should be clear on whether IPVanish is a better choice for you. In summary, I would recommend IPVanish.
